The Laundry Blues

Usually I would come on here and give you guys a great speech about how I put my outfit together. I would tell you about why I went to the store to purchase it, and how I got a great deal… Not today. I pretty much wore this because I forgot I had to attend this event and I didn’t do my laundry. This was one of the few clean items I had.

I think my favorite style is street style. I am constantly inspired by fashion living here in New York City. I think the best fashion experiences come from the streets. The city is so diverse in culture. The individual beauty of trend is exciting and every individual has a story.

How you carry yourself determines how your story is portrayed to others. I could have let the fact that I wasn’t wearing something I necessarily would have due to a lack of clean clothes tell my story for me; instead I made the best with what I had and it worked out great!

One thing that I have started to realize is that my style a little different. I may share similar taste with a few people… I may get the SAME THING, but I almost never wear it the same way. I am a dreamer so I had to add my dream catcher gold flash tattoo from ALDO.

I have been staring at my Steve Madden Fringly sandals for weeks. I decided to unbox them for the In Her Shoes Beauties Brains event yesterday in Dumbo. I must admit they are pretty but not without consequence. The event was standing room only with a short seated panel. I definitely wanted to kick my heels off and spare my feet.

I paired the cobalt blue fringe with a chunky blue rock necklace that I purchased from Macy’s during the holidays last year. I love monochrome with just a pop of color. My chartreuse clutch purchased from ROXX was just that. I just love hats and you guys know I am here for the accessories!

The main course was definitely this printed shirt dress. I fell in love with it as a two piece set from H&M but I ended up selling the pants. My personal style is just that, personal. I wear pieces that I love and I try my best to wear it with confidence. Until next time… Wear whatever you want and don’t let your style wear you!

Summer Essentials

My Summer essentials are just a few things I can’t live without so far this year. I thought this would be helpful to some of you ladies and I decided to share them here. Summer 2015 is in full swing so why not share some things that you can still get your hands on!

The swing dress is a must have! Let’s face it we all want to be cute but it’s just too hot! The swing dress is a great way to remain stylish and on trend. I picked up this dress from Forever 21Plus. I am usually a large, but I wanted the dress to have extra swing room; since I have a bigger bust. Forever 21 is more so for teens and petite Shopaholics.  No one wants to wear denim in 90 degree weather so chambray is a good alternative when done correctly.   The chambray dress isn’t on the website but you may be able to find one in your local store if they carry plus. I was able to find something similar from Romwe.

For the events that require a bit more polish this summer… another alternative is a jersey dress. I picked up a short sleeved version from Old Navy, but this burnt orange dress from Glamorous is perfect for a summer day party. Find a solid that compliments your skin-tone.

Dark skin tones look amazing in bright yellows, oranges and also olive green. If you are a medium skin tone chartreuse and corals are a great option to try. Everyone looks great in black and white so if all else fails stick with the non-colors.  There are no hard rules so feel free to try any of the colors I mentioned no matter what skintone you have.

“A’int nobody got time” for foundation. Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer is a great alternative. It has a glowy finish and buildable coverage. If your oily like me you will need to set with a powder and I usually opt for MAC Mineralized Skinfinish in Dark Deep. I have been loving this since it has gotten hot here in New York.

I have purchased a lot of shoes this year but every time I go out I find myself reaching for these Steve Madden heels. Feel free to check out my previous post for more details. But this no fuss neutral is great for every outfit in the summer.

I love a bright lip on tanned skin in this heat. One of my personal favorites is MAC’s Dangerous. If you are more of a medium tone then Lady Danger is going to be perfect! I line my lips with Cherry lip liner and I always get lots of compliments. It’s a really bold color so I usually keep everything else simple with some highlighting and mascara to finish the look.

If your not into the brights then I have also been loving MAC’s Stone lipstick. It’s a neutral brown with a purple undertone. I think it’s a unique neutral. But it can make you look a little lifeless so I go heavy on warming up my skin and usually play up the contrast with gold accessories. I use Chestnut pencil to line my lips.

If you also don’t have time for a lip in this heat then please pick up NYX Butter Gloss in your favorite shade. On the days when I don’t wear any makeup at all I will put on some gloss in “Angel Food Cake” and some origins eye brightening cream.

I have been frolicking all over the city in my Doc Marten Gryphon sandals. Red is the new black and I literally wear them all the time. They are super comfortable and paired with basics like a white t and jeans or a maxi dress you will be sure to become the topic of conversation. They just happen to be on sale so act fast… Thank me later.

I have lots of summer favorites and I could go on forever but if you start with these you will be in good shape. Thanks for reading and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask or send an email.

50 Shades of Nude: Women of Color

If you are a fan of the shoe industry you might be familiar with this photo. Christian Louboutin released a “Nude” Capsule, featuring five shades of nude for their customers. I spoke about what constitutes “nude” in terms of fashion a while back when I covered the release of the Nubian Skin undergarment collection.

In this post I will share my top picks for women of color that live towards the darker end of the spectrum. I have chosen three standard silhouettes that you should have in your nudes collection. I have also shared some simple style techniques for you to understand how they might be used in the real world.

I will start with the classic pump. This shoe can be worn in a business attire office work room, on a date with your significant other, and to a wedding or special occasion. This nude can be paired with absolutely every color! The purpose of a nude is to blend in with your skin tone and elongate your silhouette. This is your non-color. Make sure the contrast isn’t too obvious when choosing your shade of brown. Like foundation the shade should blend almost seamlessly.

I styled the suede version of this classic pump for a casual yet sexy date night option. I went for the distressed Canadian Tuxedo (Denim top and bottom) a Bordeaux lip and a very “now” fringe bag.

The next stop is the minimal sandal. This shoe is trending right now. However it is a shoe that I feel will be in style forever. Perfect for summer nights this is another heel that is essential for a shopaholic. I personally feel the suede makes the shoe look a bit more expensive but any leather finish will do just fine.

I’m sending you to brunch with the girls. Just throw on a simple t-shirt and heels for a no fuss look. A statement necklace and sleeveless trench will be sure to make the girls feel like you took some extra time putting your look together. Olive and Khaki green looks great on warm brown skin tones but any trench will be sure to turn heads!

Who said mules were only for old ladies? I have been loving the mules lately. I will give you guys a break on this one… You don’t HAVE to have a nude but you have to admit the thought is provoking. If your already tired of brown shoes, opt for a classic black or red shade.

A laid back day party… An after work mixer… Speed dating. Any of these occasions, where you want to look like you tired without actually trying… Where you want to apper to be well dressed without being high maintenance (lol) you get the point. This simple style formula. Fitted Jersey Dress + Mule +Structured Handbag = Non Threatening Chic (hat optional). If the dress is too simple for your taste a statement necklace is always encouraged. If you are more of a minimalist go for studs and a simple chain pendant.

The final shoe is a bit more sexy… Has a bit more toe cleavage and is designed for a spicier woman. If you have more of an inclination for the finer things in life and simple is not in your vocabulary… This is the shoe for you.

This outfit can be good for many things. Important boardroom presentation… A wedding… A formal date. I will let you decide! Tell me in the comments below where you would wear an outfit like this! I can’t wait to hear from you!

No Animals at the Beach

I hope everyone enjoyed their long holiday weekend. I had a girls day at the beach. I decided to quickly share my look and some tips for safe tanning this summer!!!

I love mixing prints! I paired my leopard one piece swimsuit with a bright floral kimono. A huge sun hat protected my face from the harsh rays of the sun.

The beach was quiet and the weather was perfect! We ended up staying for hours. My skin is very sensitive and although I don’t mind soaking up a good tan I do want to protect my skin from weeks of itching and looking like crocodile couture. Always remember to exfoliate thoroughly to prevent peeling and a patchy tan.

Holidays should never be spent alone, so my friend Pascal came along for the ride! Her bubbly personality and vibe made for great company! She was frolicking through the beach and I just had to capture it to show you guys!

Another reason you shouldn’t go to the beach alone… Who’s gonna put sun tan lotion on your back? No one wants their skin to look like elephants in the Sahara!

Light layers are great for the beach but will not completely protect you from the suns’ harsh Rays… Be sure to cover all the bases…. or in this case cover all your tigers (lol).

I picked up a bottle of SPF spray with 100 protection. This will affect the level of color uptake while on the beach, so if your main goal is to increase your melanin production for the day then you can always go with something with a lower SPF count.

The Look:

Hat: My friend Pascal’s Closet

Swimsuit: TJ Maxx

Kimono: Forever 21

I would love to hear you you guys spent your weekend! Tell me all about it in the comments below! Until next time! xoxo
