what to wear

Shopaholic Personal Style: VB x Target

I have seen this skirt on a lot of bloggers and it is not one of the easiest pieces to style. The bold pattern and silhouette is very over powering and you should try your best to keep everything else simple to avoid looking like a circus clown. I am here to show you how I would style this skirt to suit my own personal style.

When you are surrounded by a super bold shape, color or pattern it’s best not to fight against it. Depending on your body shape you want to pick a color already present in your pattern and use it to complete the look. I have wide shoulders and a large bust so I chose the black to style my top to slim down my top half.

This skirt is refreshing! It is fun and flirty and memorable. The VB skirt is going to be something you grab for a special event or brunch. You are definitely going to command the attention of the room with this outfit. I honestly feel that heels are definitely the way to go but you can pair with a pointed flat as well.

For the street style version of this look I paired it with a graphic tee in a similar color palette and finished it off with a statement pin and simple black heels. There are several ways to style this piece but this variation is definitely the most “me.”

I would wear this to a business meeting or personal style consultation with a client. This is a stylists business attire (lol). I enjoyed styling this piece and I hope you guys liked my version of this look.

I have included a few other images of some close up views of the details of this look. I would love to know which picture was your favorite.

Shopaholic Personal Style: VB x Target Style Series

As promised I am back with a few looks that I have put together from the Victoria Beckham and Target collaboration. I have styled all three of the pieces that I purchased from target a few weeks ago and I am going to share them all with you over the next few days.

One of the things that I love most about collaborations is that they bring expensive runway styles to the everyday shopper. I love mixing high end and affordable style. When a designer also takes this concept and runs with it, it is almost always a hit.

I loved the orange romper the most and ended up wearing this on Easter Sunday. The weather was perfect and was a much needed break from the cold that seems to not want to leave New York City. I paired the look with simple accessories and my Fe Noel Floral dress worn as a duster.

This look was a hit on the streets of Brooklyn and I received nothing but compliments. The bright hues of blue and orange paired perfectly. I don’t doubt that I will be wearing this look again somewhere very soon. I didn’t want to add any more color to the already bold look so I added my flesh-toned Steve Madden heels to finish it off.

I really enjoyed this look and I hope it inspired you to style your VBxTarget merchandise as well. Even if you were not able to get anything from the collection you can still apply the underlying principle of the outfit. Pair a solid color romper, jumpsuit or dress with a floral print overcoat or duster in a similar color family. If the colors are bold keep the rest of your accessories and makeup neutral.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post. Like always if you want to try any of the looks please tag me on your social media @thee_shopaholic. I would love to see! If you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments section. Until next time happy shopping!

Spring Fling: Shopaholic Virtual Style

Dress – Rainbow Shops • Shoes & Clutch – Zara • Sunglasses – Vera Wang • Necklace – ALDO • Denim Hat – Local Accessory Shop
The Spring season is finally here (sort of)! I picked up a few refresher pieces which I spoke to you guys about in a previous post. But I wanted to show you guys how I plan to pair the looks together once the temperature decides to cooperate here in NYC. This first look is super casual and paired with a denim jacket is perfect for running errands. It’s a look that is easy but still gives the appearance of someone who tried a little.

Dress – Rainbow Shops • Necklace – Fancy Kouture • Shoes – Target x Who What Wear • Turban – EBay

I love a good bold color moment in the spring and one of my favorite combos is the yellow and orange. His look is perfect for a brunch, date, or social event. The block heels add a level of comfort and doesn’t dress the look up too much. This is another simple dress look but the silhouette of the dress makes the outfit more event worthy.

Floral Duster/ Dress – Fe Noel • Shorts – Levi’s • Blouse – Old Navy • Earrings – Chanel • Lipstick – The Lip Bar

The next look is definitely a moment! The floor length duster dress is definitely trending upwards. It has been present for the last few years but this year it’s all about textured and detailed fabrics paired with simple inner pairings like the t-shirt and jeans. Choose one of the colors from the palette to complete your look! Wear this everywhere!

Duster – Tick Tick Boutique • Top – Adidas • Jeans – American Eagle • Shoes – Roxx by Hotpoint • Bag – EBay

Here is another duster look if you want to take baby steps into bold prints. You can always reverse the theory with a solid on the outside and your prints underneath. The concept works and it is up to you to find one that suits your own style.

Denim Jacket – Fancy Kouture • Sunglasses – Quay x Shay • Dress – Rainbow Shops • Bag – M2Malletier

Another simple day of style is this micro pleat dress paired again with a boyfriend cut denim jacket. This is perfect for a day of retail therapy. When your shopping for new items it is important to have a loose fitting dress handy. This makes it easier to get in and out of the fitting rooms when you need to try on your summer pieces. This is probably a no makeup day so grab a pair of oversized frames and your favorite neutral lip.

Jumpsuit – Old Navy • Sunglasses – Fancy Kouture • Bag – Bohoo Bazaar • Shoes – Rainbow Shops

This last look is more traditional and a perfect date night look. The color red has been proven to provoke hunger and appetite. Pair a black jumpsuit with a red lip and red accessories. You will be sure to capture your mates interest the entire night.

I would love to know which look was your favorite! If you try to recreate these looks I would love it if you tagged us! Until next time Happy Shopping!

Shopaholic Personal Style: A Week in my Wardrobe

‘Tis the season… and today is the perfect day to be festive. The spring break that we received yesterday has long since worn off and it is almost business as usual here in New York. I have never been. Huge fan of the color red but I think burgundy is a great alternative.

If you will be attending office parties this winter you want to create a balance between work wear and festive party wear. If your office is super conservative you may want to throw on a long vest or a blazer to cover up. I love the mesh top and this dress is so comfortable!

I wore this dress on my birthday and played up the sexiness by adding a strappy bra and paired it with boots. I picked up this dress from Tick Tock as well for $28. You can find similar styles on websites like Missguided. It comes in Green and Black as well as a few other color ways. The green option wasn’t available at this local boutique but I think the burgundy is a perfect choice for the holidays.

You do not need any accessories for this look but you can always add a dainty or minimal necklace under the top for a girly flare. I would love to know what you guys wore to your office party so be sure to tag me in your photos. You can use the hashtag #ShopaholicPersonalStule or just tag me @thee_shopaholic on Instagram. I would love to share the looks with my readers. Happy Holidays, don’t eat too much, but most importantly, Happy Shopping!

Thanksgiving Trends: Styling Plaid

Since the tartan trend seems to be in high demand this year; I have decided to show you five different ways to wear plaid this holiday season. These styles will allow to eat to your hearts content without having to unzip your pants.

You want to seem wholesome enough to meet the parents but edgy enough  to keep his attention on you instead of your cousin (who never seems to wear enough clothes around company). Go for a free flowing shirt dress. You can unbutton or button depending on your chest size and pair with boots and a leather jacket. It’s charming yet approchable and does not compromise sex appeal.

You’ve eaten with these people a million and one times before… but you don’t want to to seem like you just rolled out of bed? A chic flannel and high waisted stretch denim will do. If you have to venture out of the house to get extra cranberry sauce throw on a sexy bootie and that beige coat. You never know, you may meet next years dinner with the parents in the frozen food section.

A lot of people have been posting their friends giving photos on social media this year. This is the time when you want to seem a little more put-together. Go with a sleeveless leather dress. This will allow you to be warm outside but not to hot on your friends couch. The circle dress will make room for the second helping of stuffing, or macaroni and cheese. The over coat and thigh high boots will be a great conversation starter for those friends you haven’t seen since the last year’s cuffing season began.

Do you have to attend several dinners this year? You’re uncle owes your dad money, and your boyfriend won’t commit; so you’re attending three separate family dinners. Go with an oversized shift dress. You won’t be under or over dressed. Add the fedora once you get to your boyfriends place, it will make them think you put in a little extra effort. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert, consume small samples of everything important and eat quickly. Plan your exit strategy before entering each location.

If you’re working this holiday season, I am sure you’re office will be pot-lucking  a feast. Dress nicely to help with the pain of having to wake up early or stay late when the rest of the country seems to be at the parade or watching the game and eating candied yams. A sweater and plaid trousers is always cute. If heels aren’t practical go with a dressy flat in a similar hue. Hide the waist with a sleeveless overcoat. Showing skin at work is frowned upon, so dress the part.

I hope these outfits inspire you to put your most stylish boot forward this year. Pick your favorite shade of plaid and be thankful for whatever makes you happy. These looks are for inspiration. Worry less about where to get the exact pieces and more about the concept. But most importantly be YOU. Happy Thabksgiving!

Shopaholic Styles The Fashion Icons: Halloween Ideas

Now that we have all seen a million and one makeup tutorials on disgusting zombies and other undead creatures… I have decided to give you some ideas on how to go glam for Halloween. I have picked four iconic women from the past and present and I’m going to show you how to recreate their looks for Halloween.

Diana Ross.

Ross is an iconic singer, actress, song writer and just beautiful woman. At the young age of seventy-one it is safe to say she has worn it all! I chose this particular look because it embodies her elegance and at the same time risqué demeanor. This look is simple and beautiful.

Pair a low cut jumpsuit with a plush fur jacket and accessorize how you see fit. Fish net head pieces are everywhere this year so you shouldn’t have trouble finding one. Vintage style earrings and strappy sandals to finish the look. If you feel your waist is getting lost in the look add a waist cinching embellished belt. Halloween doesn’t always have to be tacky or full of gore.

Marilyn Monroe.

Everyone knows this woman. Marilyn represents this unattainable standard of beauty and was the Kim Kardashian of the 50s. This photo is one of her most recognizable images to date. Other than her torrid affair with the president of the United States and her acting career, she was known far and wide as America’s Sweet Heart. Ok if you ignore the drugs and alcohol and sleeping around you have to admit this is a Halloween costume that is easily identifiable. If you don’t want to get the cheap ruffle dress from party city here is a chic alternative.

Pair a sweet mini dress in winter white with a pair of flesh tone heels. I chose this sheath dress because of the flirty Ruffles at the base. If the look is too simple you can always pair with a bling statement necklace. Do not forget the signature red lip and mole. Find a blonde wig and you’re set!

Audrey Hepburn.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is the fashionista fairy tale on film. Audrey Hepburns little black dress is timeless and definitely worthy of recreating for Halloween. I love the hats from this era. This is easily one of my most favorite looks.

The hat and pearls are a must. Take this look all the way with a pair of satin gloves that come all the way to the elbow. This look is simple chic and if you ask me can still be worn after Halloween.

Jessica Rabbit.

Ok so this last look was just an extra imaginary icon I decided to add just for fun. Jessica Rabbit was a sexy trollop with a dope outfit. Wife of Roger Rabbit she is just a cool cartoon chick. If you guys choose this one I would love to see!

Any sexy red maxi dress will do but you definitely need the purple gloves and fiery red hair. Pair with red pumps and a dark lip.

No matter which looks you decide to go with for Halloween just remember to put your best fashion foot forward. Happy Shopping!

New York Fashion Week: Model Casting and What to Wear

When attending your Fashion Week Model Castings in the city be sure to dress the part. Here are some examples of What To Wear Stick to basic colors like Black | Grey | White and Blue or Black bottoms. Designers want to see your underlying figure to help them make their final decisions.

Bring anything that will make you memorable or stand out from the crowd. I don’t mean a fringe top or bright red lipstick. I am talking about a resume. In the model and fashion world that means a comp card. A composite card is a simple summary of WHO YOU ARE. This can be a simple head shot with your name and model measurements. This will help the designers and casters know how you photograph and give them a quick look at you as a model.

Make sure your heels are at least 4″ high and a stiletto. Block heels, wedges and platforms are not appropriate BUT if that is all you have, make sure your WALK is so fierce they forget what shoes you are wearing! Most importantly be confident and be FEARLESS!

When you are going out for castings just like your body, the caster wants to see your FACE. No Makeup Makeup is always best. Concealer, Groomed Brows, Mascara and a Nude Lip is a perfect start, and that’s also where it should end.

Now that your dressed and your face is lightly beat to perfection. I just want to see you WALK into Fashion Week like its the last of the year, which it is…

What to Wear During Fashion Week

If you are like me and you have no clue what you will be rocking at runway shows this season; then, you are in luck. I decided to compile some style-spiration. Most of my inspiration comes from the actual streets of New York; however, there are several ways you can gather creativity without staring at people. I picked up every fashion magazine ever written… In hopes of finding THEE perfect look.

Before I can browse a magazine I have to first have an idea of the kind of girl I want to be during fashion week. In my mind there are three types of fashionistas. During the fashion holiday season that is Fashion Week, you will find categories of women.

The Minimalist.

This chic street gal loves clean lines and simple accessories. The pieces she chooses are usually well tailored, and made of the best fabrics. She might get a statement shoe like the lady on the far right or a structured bag like the beauty on the far left. On a good day she may also step out of the box and don a chunky statement necklace (after all it is NYFW).

The Trend-Setter.

These style goddesses are usually wearing the latest style trends and know exactly what is hot and what is NOT. Trendy style seekers are usually mixing their old and new pieces to create unique and interesting trend stories. Maybe the printed pants you bought last year would go well with the statement blouse you got in this years ZARA Sale; why not sweeten the deal and wear your moms vintage heels circa 1986.

The Show Stopper (Avante garde)

If it hasn’t been seen before, these women probably know exactly where it exists or where to have it made. They coexist in circles that house designers, a seamstress, and a boutique owner all of whom like to use her as their muse. These women style these pieces in a way that make you feel like you could never afford their street style swag. Thinking outside of the box is so last year… These women are now using the box as a clutch and creating next years trend.

Once you have figured out the kind of essence you want to bring to the sides of the runway this year, find out what pieces you need to make that happen. Search your favorite magazine and try to find looks that are similar to your style animal. The magazines are great because for the most part they will tell you exactly where you need to go, to purchase that piece.

Maybe you aren’t a fan of magazines. Maybe some blogger came to your local CVS and bought up all of the good ones. Social media is a great place to find motivation to put your best style forward.

Just like the magazines your favorite style blogger is usually more than willing to share where they snagged their great pieces (if you ask nicely).

Keep in mind you might not be able to get exactly what you are looking for. The vest might be sold out, the dress might be back ordered and the perfect shoe might not be available in your size. I always tell my clients not to marry the image but more-so the concept. If you like the look of a vest or blazer with one solid color story inside and a simple black or nude shoe; then, go with that. The theory is what you should be looking for when you set out to make your purchases or shop your closet.

You also want to keep in mind that the overall silouhette is important. Take into consideration what shapes and styles are best for your body type. Once you have decided what your final purchases are going to be, you can style them. Pay attention to complementary colors and don’t over do it.

I hope these tips where helpful… I will end it here because I feel you ladies are now ready to shop. I hope to see you guys out and about this fashion season. Until next time. Happy Shopping!

Back to School Lookbook

Autumn is just around the corner! We are all trying to squeeze in the last few beach days… But before  you know it the summer will be long gone. I know some states have already gone back to the books. This blog is for my shopaholics who will be going back to highschool, back to college and back to work in September. I have done one of these in the past so feel free to reference my Back To School Essentials from last year along with this one.

If you are a student and comfortable chic is your goal then this style formula is perfect for you. Sweaters and cargo pants never go out of style. But in order to make the look a bit more stylish stick to one color family and add n interesting shoe or sneaker. Leopard print is the new nude: however, a red or bright pink sneaker will be just as effective. This look is perfect for the classroom.

You can never go wrong with a white t shirt and jeans. I styled this turtleneck body suit and highwaisted denim pants with a black and white sneaker and a simple red hat. This outfit is effortless but will have your classmates thinking you don’t belong in school but on a runway somewhere. This is also perfect for a date night with your beaux that you haven’t seen all summer.

This third look is definitely for my fashionistas. This is for the girl who values fashion over comfort. This look is extra simple. All black never goes out of style. It can be easily transformed by finding a black and white printed flat instead of a heel. For all my college fashion, merchandising and design majors this is definitely a look to try for the fall.

These last two looks are for my teachers. Your summer sabbatical is coming to a close. Being a teacher does not mean you have to sacrifice your style in the least. People respect women in power when they dress the part. Simple knits in neutral colors will have you looking your best while sitting at the front of the room. If your figure is more suggestive the sleeveless duster is perfect for keeping the look work room appropriate.

This last look is a bit more accessoried; but will still be appropriate for your students. This is for the teacher who has a lunch date I between lectures or a dinner with the husband after work. Add a chunky necklace and a printed clutch for an easy transition from the work room to the dinner table.

I hope you ladies enjoyed the looks please let me know which ones you can’t wait to try. Remember to study the concept and not the individual pieces when shopping for your fall closet. Happy Shopping!

The Inside Scoop on Outside Wear

For those if us that are Fashion conscious outer wear becomes our biggest focus in the colder months. I personally focus less on the outfit itself (not completely… We still have to look good), and more on Coats, boots and hats. Outerwear is usually the most expensive section of a clothing website. Today I’m going to share with you some places you can go to get fashionable outerwear without breaking your piggy bank.

The best time to purchase outerwear is at the end of the season or completely out of the season. Get a leather or fur coat during the summer. Companies will be more willing to bargain when the demand is low. More often than not the trendy pieces will not be around during these times. But you will find a more classic piece that you will probably wear for years to come. I also like to buy coats at the end of the season. If I can restrain myself I will wear them the following fall or winter. This also lessens the need for me to buy a new jacket at the top of the season.

As I mentioned in a previous post there was a huge sale going on at some of my favorite major retailers. Forever 21, H&M and ZARA had great sales over the past holiday weekend. I picked up 3 coats from Forever 21 and one from ZARA.

This coat is a blogger favorite. I already have two other winter white coats, but what can I say I like what I like. The coat is very warm but only has one hook closure so be sure to get a chunky scarf if it’s cold or windy out.

This coat is a bit daring and the photos from the website do this coat no justice. The faux leather paneling makes the coat stand out. I am still waiting for this piece to come in the mail and I will be sure to share better pics. The sale is over now and the coat went back up to $49.99 but. Believe me when I tell you if you can get your hands on it, it is a must have.
